Washington fines BP, Olympic Pipeline Company for 2023 oil spill in Skagit County

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Ecology announced a $3. 8 million penalty against BP Pipelines and Olympic Pipeline Company for a gasoline spill that occurred in December 2023. The incident, which forced the Conway School to close briefly, involved over 21,000 gallons of gasoline leaking into a stream due to a corroded carbon steel nut. The state is also requesting more than $800,000 to cover the costs of the cleanup, which lasted approximately three months. BP emphasized their immediate response and collaboration with local agencies to contain the spill and mitigate environmental damage.

This fine marks the second enforcement action against the Olympic Pipeline Company in the last five years, highlighting ongoing safety concerns. BP plans to review the state’s findings and continue constructive engagement with the Department of Ecology. The ruling arrives as the company addresses another leak in the pipeline near Everett. Ensuring public health and environmental safety remains a priority for BP, according to their statement.
