City of Bellingham agrees to tighten emissions control at sewage treatment plant

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham City Council unanimously voted to enhance emissions controls at the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in response to violations alleged by the Northwest Clean Air Agency. The council authorized Mayor Kim Lund to sign a settlement agreement that mandates the installation of additional air pollution controls and carbon monoxide monitors. This agreement, signed on November 18, 2025, does not constitute an admission of guilt by the city, which has previously denied any wrongdoing. In March 2024, the Northwest Clean Air Agency identified multiple violations concerning missing permits and noncompliance with emission regulations. The city plans to implement the required changes over the next five years, demonstrating a commitment to improving air quality.

Local officials emphasize the importance of this action in addressing community health concerns and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. The initiative reflects Bellingham's ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability and protect public health. As such, it represents a significant step towards reducing emissions from municipal operations.
