Whatcom Transit Authority, other statewide bus services awarded new federal funding

The Federal Transit Administration unveiled a $2 billion initiative to modernize bus services nationwide, with Washington receiving eight grants. Whatcom Transportation Authority was awarded nearly $17 million to replace its aging diesel buses with hybrid alternatives, a move aimed at improving safety and reducing carbon emissions. Board Chairperson Ali Hawkinson highlighted the funding's importance for enhancing service reliability and benefiting the community. Skagit Transit received just over $9 million to expand its paratransit services and purchase eight larger coach buses, further contributing to regional transit improvements.
