Stakeholders criticize WWU leadership over recent layoffs

Bellingham, WALocal News

Nearly 300 stakeholders at Western Washington University criticized the administration over recent layoffs impacting 94 positions. They delivered a letter to university leaders, including President Sabah Randhawa, seeking transparency about the criteria behind these job cuts. The layoffs resulted from a significant budget deficit, prompting the elimination of 20 positions over the summer and an additional 74 earlier in the year. The letter emphasized that many of the lost roles were crucial for supporting both students and employees, particularly due to the disbandment of the student affairs office. The delegation's spokesperson indicated that they had not received a response to their letter by November 18.

Stakeholders are asking for acknowledgment of the layoffs' impacts and clearer communication regarding any future cuts. This situation highlights ongoing financial challenges at the university and raises questions about its priorities. The demand for transparency reflects broader concerns about governance and accountability in educational institutions.
