WSDOT to decide to relocate or demolish famed Bellingham graffiti rock

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will decide by November 1 on the future of the I-5 graffiti rock, a cherished landmark in Bellingham. Spokesperson RB McKeon explained that the rock needs to be moved to create a temporary bypass road for fish passage construction through Chuckanut Creek. Although two private property owners expressed interest in acquiring the rock, WSDOT determined it cannot be relocated as a whole due to financial and logistical challenges. Instead, the agency plans to break the rock into smaller sections while still offering it to interested parties. If no owner steps forward, the rock will be demolished, and pieces will be made available for community distribution.

WSDOT understands the rock's cultural significance and is delaying the decision to maximize its chance for preservation. The graffiti rock has been a landmark for decades, representing local artistry and community spirit. The outcome of this decision will impact the community's connection to this significant piece of local history.
