Barbara Demorest Founder of Knitted Knockers
Knitted Knockers, established by Barbara Demorest, has supported breast cancer survivors with knitted prosthetics for 15 years. Demorest, who faced breast cancer in 2011, found knitted knockers to be a more comfortable alternative to traditional silicone prosthetics. The nonprofit quickly gained popularity, shipping over 12,000 knockers monthly, with a total exceeding 1,000,000 to date. Volunteers throughout the U. S.
knit and crochet knockers, and the organization provides a downloadable pattern that has been downloaded over 1,000,000 times. Demorest prioritizes maintaining the service free of charge to ensure accessibility for all breast cancer patients. Currently, over 2,400 medical offices in the U. S. are part of a network offering these prosthetics.
Demorest's commitment extends beyond national borders, as she has traveled to Rwanda to teach cancer patients how to create their own knockers. This initiative highlights the organization's global impact and the need for accessible resources in less advanced medical environments.
