Blaine man died in federal custody after car crash near Peace Arch border crossing

Bellingham, WALocal News

Trinn Hatch, a 43-year-old man from Blaine, died in federal custody after a car crash and subsequent foot chase at the Peace Arch Port of Entry on September 20. U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended Hatch after he crashed into a curb and attempted to flee, during which a handgun fell from his waist. Officers restrained him and transported him in a wheelchair to a secondary inspection area.

After failing to wake him, they called 911, but emergency medical services pronounced him dead approximately one hour later. A preliminary autopsy indicated a major artery blockage, while toxicology results are still pending. Officers found cocaine, marijuana, ketamine, and a THC vape in a fanny pack he was wearing. The incident is under review by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility. This case raises concerns about the protocols followed during apprehension and the health crisis that unfolded.
