Bellingham City Council adopts plan to combat invasive freshwater mussels
Bellingham City Council approved a comprehensive plan to combat the potential invasion of invasive freshwater mussels in Lake Whatcom. The Public Works and Natural Resources Committee presented the plan, which emphasizes collaboration between local and state agencies for a swift response. These invasive mussels can disrupt ecosystems, clog water systems, and damage recreational and industrial machinery. Senior Scientist Mark Cecchini Beaver from Four Peaks Environmental cautioned that shipping routes from infested areas pose significant risks for introducing these species. Currently, Washington reports no established populations of quagga, zebra, or golden mussels, but the threat remains real.
The council's plan will soon face votes from the Whatcom County Council and Lake Whatcom Water and District Commissioners. This action is crucial for protecting the region's water resources and natural habitats. Proactive measures now could prevent severe ecological and economic consequences in the future.
