Whatcom County puts 3.6 million grant towards new housing options in Bellingham
Whatcom County announced a $3. 6 million grant to develop supportive housing for residents with behavioral health needs. The funding, sourced from the Trueblood Diversion Workgroup, will facilitate the construction of 37 new housing units, including 11 designated for individuals facing delays in restoration services after criminal charges. These units will be integrated into Lake Whatcom Center's new Lincoln Street development. Whatcom County Executive Satpal Singh Sidhu praised the project's significance and credited Senator Sharon Shewmake for her advocacy in securing funds.
The initiative also involves investments from the City of Bellingham and the state Department of Commerce, highlighting a collaborative effort to address local housing needs. This expansion aims to improve access to permanent supportive housing, fostering a more effective and compassionate local justice system. The county's commitment to enhancing behavioral health resources is vital for community well-being. By investing in supportive housing, local officials hope to reduce recidivism and promote recovery among vulnerable populations.
