The Great Washington Shakeout takes place on October 16

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Great Washington Shakeout is set for 10:16 a. m. on October 16, engaging over a million participants statewide in earthquake and tsunami preparedness. State Emergency Management Division tsunami evacuation manager Dante Disabatino highlights the significance of practicing safety measures like drop, cover, and hold on. Those living near the coast should evacuate to higher ground during the drill.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone poses a 10 to 30 percent chance of a major earthquake occurring within the next 50 years, necessitating regular preparedness practices. Disabatino recalls the Nisqually earthquake of 2001, which underscored the need for such drills. This year, the state will test its tsunami siren system, which consists of over 120 sirens, including multiple locations in Whatcom County. Residents are encouraged not to call 9-1-1 if they hear the sirens wailing during the drill. For further details on participation, residents can visit shakeout.
