Road access to Artist Point at Mount Baker closed for winter season

Bellingham, WALocal News

WSDOT announced on Wednesday morning the closure of the last 2. 7 miles of SR 542, effectively ending access to Artist Point for the winter season. This annual closure generally takes place in autumn as the North Cascades begin to accumulate snow. Over the past weekend, the area experienced its first significant snowfall, with the National Weather Service predicting up to 12 inches on Mount Baker. The closure is particularly impactful for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who visit Artist Point during the warmer months for its scenic views.

WSDOT indicated that the road will likely remain closed until June, as has been typical in previous years. This seasonal closure not only affects local recreation but also has implications for tourism in Whatcom County. The decision underscores the challenges of maintaining access to popular outdoor destinations during winter weather conditions. Residents and visitors will need to plan accordingly as access to this popular hiking spot is restricted.
