Utility rates for Bellingham residents to increase in 2026

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham residents will experience a 13. 5% increase in water utility rates starting January 2026. The City Council voted in favor of the increase in July to fund critical upgrades to the city's water infrastructure, which includes systems over a century old. Public Works emphasized that these investments are necessary to maintain the quality of drinking water and manage wastewater and stormwater systems effectively. To ease the financial burden on residents, the city will expand its Customer Assistance Program, enabling households at or below 80% of the area median income to receive reduced rates starting in 2026.

This program aims to support those most affected by the rate change. Future increases are also planned as infrastructure needs persist. These adjustments reflect a broader trend in municipalities grappling with aging systems and the need for sustainable funding solutions. The city's proactive measures highlight its commitment to maintaining essential services while supporting vulnerable populations.
