Dept. of Ecology reminds residents of flood safety this winter

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Ecology warns about increased flood risks as rain arrives, declaring October as Flood Awareness Month. Seasonal weather changes significantly raise the chances of flooding and related damages across the state. Areas that have suffered from prolonged drought or wildfire activity, such as Whatcom County, face the highest risks for flooding and landslides. In November 2021, the Nooksack River overflowed its banks during an atmospheric river event, impacting local residents. Those living in high-risk zones, particularly near bodies of water or at lower elevations, are often mandated to purchase flood insurance.

The Department of Ecology emphasizes that all parts of the state are susceptible to floodwaters. With climate change influencing weather patterns, officials anticipate larger and more frequent floods in the future. The warning serves as a crucial reminder for residents to prepare for the winter season.
