Lummi health officials warn community of dangerous drugs following multiple overdoses
Lummi Nation health officials issued a community alert about dangerous drugs circulating in Whatcom County following multiple overdoses over the weekend. The Lummi Nation Health Center reported that Narcan was not sufficient for treatment, requiring ongoing respiratory support for victims. Preliminary tests indicated the presence of carfentanil, a synthetic opioid that can be up to 100 times more potent than fentanyl, and the sedative xylazine, also known as “tranq. ” Officials encouraged the public to carry Narcan at all times and to call 9-1-1 in case of an overdose, emphasizing the need for CPR if a victim is unresponsive. Emergency room visits for overdoses have declined each month since June, according to local data.
This alert highlights the urgency for community members to be informed and prepared amidst the ongoing opioid crisis. The Lummi Nation Health Center aims to improve public safety and reduce overdose fatalities. The presence of these potent substances raises significant concerns for community health and safety.
