New sales tax funding public safety services takes effect in Bellingham next year
Bellingham's city council approved a new sales tax to fund public safety services, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This one-tenth of one percent tax will add ten cents to every $100 purchase, generating an estimated $4 million in its first year. Council member Michael Lilliquist stated that the tax is crucial to prevent cuts that could eliminate 25 to 35 positions across various city departments. Revenue from the tax will support vital services, including public defense, alternative response teams, and mental health programs. The city is currently facing a $10 million budget deficit, making this funding critical.
The approval of this tax comes after the state Legislature allowed eligible cities to implement such measures without needing voter consent. The council also raised the threshold for obtaining a general business license in conjunction with the tax approval. This approach aims to bolster public safety and address the city’s fiscal challenges effectively.
