Port of Bellingham plans to boost economy in Point Roberts
The Port of Bellingham introduced a strategic plan to address economic challenges in Point Roberts, a community heavily reliant on Canadian tourism. The report, funded by the state, underscores the vulnerabilities created by recent trade tariffs and reduced travel across the border. Proposed measures include the public acquisition and revitalization of the Point Roberts Marina to enhance tourism and facilitate commercial and residential development. Additionally, the plan emphasizes the need for improved broadband infrastructure and a modernized sewer system. A Resilience Hub is also proposed to aid small businesses in adapting to economic shifts.
Port staff will present this strategy to a community advisory committee on Oct. 16, inviting feedback from local residents. The strategy aims to foster a more sustainable economy by diversifying revenue sources. Strengthening the local economy is crucial for Point Roberts' long-term viability.
