WTA moves to finalize purchase of former Base Camp property

The Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) has finalized a $6. 2 million purchase of the former Base Camp property in Bellingham, signaling a significant redevelopment initiative. The site, previously used as a homeless shelter, will be transformed into office space and a new bus station, addressing the current station's capacity limitations. WTA spokesperson Maureen McCarthy highlighted that the existing station, maxed out at 10 gates, cannot accommodate new routes or increase service frequency. Plans for the new station include expanding to 20 gates, with construction anticipated to begin in 2030.

Community input has prompted WTA to consider collaborating with a private developer to include both workforce and market-rate housing at the site. In the interim, the property will be utilized for office space, with rentals expected to begin in early 2026. The purchase is set to close on October 20, marking a crucial step in enhancing local transit infrastructure. This redevelopment aligns with broader efforts to improve transportation accessibility in the region.
