Burn bans lifted in North Cascades National Park, unincorporated Whatcom County

Bellingham, WALocal News

The North Cascades National Park and Whatcom County will lift their burn bans this week due to favorable weather conditions and reduced fire risks. Campfires are now allowed in designated areas in the park as of September 29. The Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed that its county-wide burn ban will end at midnight on October 4, enabling residents to conduct open burning of yard debris and campfires. A burn permit remains necessary for any fires larger than four feet by four feet. Officials remind campers to keep fires small and supervise them to minimize wildfire risks.

Residents in the Point Roberts, Lummi Island, or Sandy Point fire districts must verify local regulations before burning. This change comes as the region experiences a transition in fire season conditions. The lifting of burn bans reflects a significant policy adjustment aimed at balancing recreational activities with safety measures.
