Price for Discover Pass will soon increase to visit state parks
Washington state lawmakers enacted a law increasing the Discover Pass price from $30 to $45, the first increase since its launch in 2011. The legislation, HB 5390, also recognizes the Lifetime Veterans’ Disability Pass as an acceptable alternative to the Discover Pass. However, it removes an exemption for veterans that waived reservation fees, impacting their access to park facilities. Birch Bay, Larrabee, and Peace Arch State Parks in Whatcom County require a Discover Pass for entry. This price adjustment seeks to address funding challenges faced by state parks due to rising operational expenses.
The Discover Pass allows access to over 100 state parks across Washington. Lawmakers emphasize the importance of maintaining park services for outdoor recreation. The new pricing structure reflects ongoing efforts to sustain natural resources and recreational opportunities in the state.
