Skagit County Board of County Commissioners to discuss future of Meals on Wheels program

Bellingham, WALocal News

Skagit County will hold a public meeting on Monday to address the future of its Meals on Wheels program, which serves hot meals to seniors via delivery and at local centers. Rising costs have prompted the county to act, with projected expenses for senior services estimated to surpass $1. 7 million in 2026. Over the last decade, these costs have more than doubled, while funding has stagnated. The Board of County Commissioners has emphasized that they are not considering closing any senior centers or the Meals on Wheels program.

Instead, they are exploring the option of finding a new non-profit operator to manage the service. The meeting will be open to the public and will take place from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm in the commissioners’ hearing room in Mount Vernon. This discussion is crucial as it directly impacts the well-being of senior citizens in the community. The outcome of this meeting could significantly alter the landscape of senior services in Skagit County.
