Positive numbers of Chinook salmon allow extended fishing dates at Whatcom Creek

Bellingham, WALocal News

Whatcom Creek's fishing season has been extended for two weekends due to unexpectedly high Chinook salmon numbers, allowing fishing until October 5. The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife made this announcement, citing the robust return of hatchery Chinook. Fishing is limited to Saturdays and Sundays, leaving four more operational days for anglers. Each participant can catch up to two hatchery Chinook per day, with a size limit of over 12 inches. Forecasts indicated a record return of these salmon, beginning in mid-August and continuing into October.

The decision to extend the season reflects efforts to balance fishing opportunities with conservation. This extension not only benefits local anglers but also supports the local economy through increased fishing activity. The department encourages responsible fishing practices to maintain the health of the salmon population.
