Recall issued for potentially radioactive shrimp in Washington

Bellingham, WALocal News

Aquastar Corp of Seattle has issued a recall for shrimp products potentially contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope that can increase cancer risk with prolonged ingestion. The FDA indicated that the recall includes Aquastar’s Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers and Kroger shrimp sold at Fred Meyer and QFC locations in Washington State. These products were available for purchase between June 12 and September 17. While low levels of Cesium-137 are generally not harmful, continuous consumption can lead to serious health issues. This recall follows a previous discovery of the same isotope in imported frozen shrimp.

The FDA urges consumers who purchased the affected shrimp to dispose of it or return it to the store for a full refund. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding food safety and contamination in seafood products. The presence of radioactive materials in food raises significant public health questions, necessitating vigilance from both consumers and regulatory agencies.
