WDFW closes all fishing on the North Fork Nooksack River
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has announced an indefinite closure of fishing on the North Fork Nooksack River, effective immediately, to protect the spawning Chinook salmon. Recent surveys conducted by the Department of Ecology identified active spawning grounds for endangered Chinook in the area. WDFW will keep the closure in place until the salmon have completed their spawning activities. The North Fork Nooksack River stretches from the Highway 9 Bridge to Nooksack Falls, and this closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the protection of the species. In contrast, the mainstream Nooksack River has returned to its permanent fishing regulations as the Chinook have moved away from that area.
Anglers are encouraged to stay informed about fishing regulations by visiting the WDFW website or checking with local tackle shops. This decision reflects ongoing efforts to preserve local fish populations amid environmental concerns. Protecting the Chinook salmon is vital for maintaining the ecological balance in the region.
