Whatcom County names local, national firms to design and build new jail

Bellingham, WALocal News

Whatcom County has selected a combination of local and national firms to design and build a new jail located on LaBounty Drive in Ferndale. The design team includes Nelson Worldwide, a national firm, and RMC Architects, which has previously designed several significant local buildings like the Bellingham Public Library. Construction will be executed by Clark Construction alongside RAM Construction, both of which have local ties. Project manager Rob Ney noted that the selection of local firms was driven by their expertise and ability to collaborate effectively with national partners. Negotiations with all four firms are ongoing, with contracts expected to be finalized this week.

The new jail aims to address the county's growing needs and is planned to be completed by summer 2028. This project reflects a broader trend in infrastructure development within the region. Local stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact this facility will have on community safety and services.
