DUI arrests in Bellingham continue to rise above prior averages

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham has seen a dramatic rise in DUI arrests, totaling 318 between January 1 and September 9, 2025. This figure surpasses the number of days that have passed this year and shows a marked increase compared to the same periods in 2019 through 2024. Lt. Claudia Murphy clarified that this number only reflects DUI charges, not including related incidents such as vehicular assaults or hit-and-runs involving drugs or alcohol. The recent Labor Day Weekend contributed to this total, with eight arrests occurring within the city limits.

The upward trend in DUI arrests raises pressing concerns about public safety on Bellingham's roads. Local authorities may need to consider enhanced enforcement measures or community outreach programs to address the growing issue. The data suggests a need for increased awareness and prevention efforts to reduce DUI incidents. Addressing this trend is crucial for ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike.
