Lynden man pleads not guilty in Bellingham assault case

Joseph Drager, a 35-year-old man from Lynden, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including rape, robbery, and assault, during his arraignment in Whatcom County Superior Court. These charges relate to a violent incident that occurred on August 20 at Little Squalicum Park in Bellingham. The 48-year-old victim, who has Downs Syndrome, reported that Drager assaulted her at knifepoint and stole her purse and phone. Following the attack, investigators from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office used surveillance footage to identify Drager, resulting in his arrest approximately one week later. He currently remains incarcerated at the Whatcom County Jail without the possibility of bail.

The trial is set to commence on October 10 and is projected to last four days. This case highlights concerns regarding safety in public parks and the protection of vulnerable individuals. Local authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and community awareness to prevent such incidents.
