The air quality index fluctuated between 160 and 175 on Friday, categorizing the air as unhealthy for the general population. Stations near the Perry Fire reported alarming levels as high as 250, which are classified as very unhealthy.

In contrast, western Whatcom County reported better air quality levels, ranging from 55 to the low 100s in Bellingham. The closure aims to safeguard recreationists from potential health issues linked to poor air quality.
