Hot and dry conditions raise fire risk in Whatcom County this week

Bellingham, WALocal News

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a fire weather watch and heat advisory for Whatcom County, particularly affecting the North Cascades. The fire weather watch is in effect from Wednesday afternoon to evening, warning of critical fire conditions above 1,500 feet. Local temperatures could soar into the mid-90s, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses among residents. The Perry Fire, sparked by lightning, has scorched over 600 acres and poses challenges for firefighting efforts due to poor visibility. A helicopter attempted to drop water on the fire but had to retreat.

More fire crews will join the efforts against the Perry Fire starting Tuesday, September 2. Additionally, two rural wildfires in Skagit County have been either contained or fully suppressed after burning a total of 2 acres. The NWS emphasizes that continued dry weather will likely keep several wildfires active in the area.
