Ferndale City Council candidate with invalid voter registration to remain on November ballot

Bellingham, WALocal News

Steven Potvin, a candidate for Ferndale City Council's Position 7, remains on the November ballot despite an invalid voter registration ruling by the Whatcom County Canvassing Board. The board determined that Potvin's registered address, a karate studio he owns, does not reflect his true residence, which lies outside city limits. Potvin argues that staying overnight at his studio once a week qualifies it as a residence. The board ordered him to amend his registration or face cancellation, emphasizing compliance with state law. Potvin intends to appeal the decision, while Whatcom County Auditor Stacy Henthorn explained that a court order is necessary to remove a candidate from the ballot.

Norman Stewart, who initiated the challenge to Potvin's registration, stated he will only consider further action if Potvin wins the election. The board, composed of three impartial members, oversees voter registration challenges and certifies election returns. This ruling highlights the importance of accurate voter registration in local elections.
