Port of Bellingham releases new study analyzing industrial land use

Bellingham, WALocal News

A study from the Port of Bellingham reveals that Whatcom County possesses around 3,400 acres of zoned industrial land, enough to accommodate future job growth. Yet, consulting group Maul Foster Alongi found that nearly 1,000 acres are compromised due to inadequate transportation access and missing utilities like water and power. The report suggests several strategies, including expanding wetland mitigation options and improving infrastructure for truck corridors, to enhance land usability. Port Economic Development Director Tyler Schroeder highlighted the study's role in supporting local businesses and job retention. The study's findings come as Whatcom County and its cities finalize their updates for the 2025 Comprehensive Plan.

Addressing the identified barriers is essential for promoting sustainable economic growth in the region. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the county can meet the demands of a changing economy. Enhanced zoning regulations and infrastructure improvements are key to unlocking the potential of the available industrial land.
