Bellinghams regulations on shelter spaces may be changing

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham City Council will conduct a public hearing on proposed amendments to shelter space regulations at its meeting on Monday. The changes aim to remove limitations on the number of guests a temporary shelter can host, allowing for increased capacity. Additional amendments include modifying guidelines for reporting homeless youth and eliminating operating hour requirements for shelters. The Planning Commission previously voted to recommend these changes to ensure local laws align with state regulations. Temporary shelter regulations, established in 2018, apply to facilities like tiny home villages and safe parking spaces.

The proposed changes could significantly impact how shelters operate and serve the community. Residents interested in participating in the public hearing must sign up in advance before the 7 p. m. start time. This move reflects an ongoing effort to address homelessness in Bellingham effectively.
