Whatcom County receives over 875,000 in federal funding for Lummi Island ferry operations
Whatcom County Public Works received over $875,000 in federal funding to enhance Lummi Island ferry operations amidst a nationwide $175 million allocation from the U. S. Department of Transportation. Washington State garnered the largest share of funding, nearly $40 million, primarily benefiting Washington State Ferries. The Lummi Island ferry's operations will be affected this weekend due to necessary cable replacement work at the terminals.
As a result, late-night ferry trips will be canceled, with the last sailing on Friday and Saturday nights scheduled for 10:10 p. m. Service will resume at 7 a. m. the following mornings.
This funding is vital for sustaining transportation for residents and visitors of Lummi Island. The ongoing support reflects a commitment to maintaining essential ferry services in Washington. The investment also highlights the importance of federal funding in local infrastructure improvements.
