U.S. Coast Guard rescues 12 kayakers between Patos Island and Sucia Island
On August 14, the U. S. Coast Guard sprang into action to rescue 12 kayakers, including six children, who were in distress between Patos Island and Sucia Island. The Coast Guard crew from Bellingham worked alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Washington State Park crew to ensure a swift rescue. The kayakers' VHF marine radio was instrumental in alerting authorities, showcasing its importance in emergencies.
Capt. Michael Hunt underscored the necessity of such devices, stating they can be crucial when cellular communication fails. Fortunately, all individuals were returned safely to Orcas Island without any reported injuries. This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with kayaking in remote areas. The Coast Guard often conducts training and outreach to improve safety awareness among recreational boaters.
Ensuring that all watercraft carry reliable communication tools can save lives in critical situations.
