TRAFFIC WSDOT closes sections of I-5 in Bellingham and Seattle starting this weekend

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close sections of I-5 in Seattle and Bellingham for roadwork starting this weekend. Northbound I-5 in Seattle will be shut down from midnight Friday, Aug. 15, until early Monday morning, though express lanes will remain operational. In Bellingham, starting Sunday night, drivers will be rerouted to a temporary two-lane bypass as crews work on a fish passage project. The project involves excavating an old culvert to install a larger one, allowing fish to swim beneath the interstate.

Additional closures will affect both northbound and southbound lanes from Aug. 17 to Aug. 20 during nighttime hours. WSDOT emphasizes that drivers should expect delays and consider alternate routes to avoid congestion. The construction efforts reflect ongoing commitments to improve infrastructure and support environmental initiatives in the region.

Staying updated with WSDOT's website is recommended for real-time traffic alerts.
