WDFW detects invasive European green crabs in Salish Sea
The Washington Department of Wildlife (WDFW) has reported the detection of invasive European green crabs near Port Gamble and Port Ludlow, a concerning development for the Salish Sea ecosystem. These crabs threaten local marine life by preying on eelgrass, bivalve mollusks, and crustaceans. Additionally, a green crab molt was confirmed in False Bay on San Juan Island, the first evidence of their presence since 2019. European green crabs have expanded along the coast since the 1980s, affecting multiple coastal bays. The WDFW encourages the public to report any sightings of these invasive species to help manage their spread.
Invasive species like the European green crab can cause significant ecological and economic harm, underscoring the urgency of the situation. The local community's involvement is crucial in combating this invasive threat. Continued monitoring and reporting can aid efforts to protect the region's native marine species.
