Cleanup continues as over 600 gallons of diesel was spilled into Padden Creek

Bellingham, WALocal News

Crews continue to address a significant diesel spill in Padden Creek, where over 676 gallons of diesel were released from a faulty pump. The incident has resulted in the death of three coho salmon and one crayfish, prompting wildlife responders to advise the public against capturing affected animals. Instead, they encourage reporting sightings to 1-800-22-BIRDS. The Washington Department of Ecology, along with local tribes and contractors, leads the cleanup efforts, which include the removal of contaminated soil. A stop work order remains in effect for the fish passage project area until remediation is complete and a new pump is installed.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of environmental protection in local waterways. The community is urged to remain vigilant about wildlife safety during the cleanup process. Local officials stress that immediate action is crucial to prevent further wildlife impact.
