Fuel leak reported in Padden Creek during fish passage project
The City of Bellingham confirmed a second fuel leak in Padden Creek last week during a fish passage project in Fairhaven, Washington. This leak, which originated from a contractor's generator, follows an earlier incident on August 3, when crews contained several hundred gallons of fuel before it could reach Bellingham Bay. The Washington State Department of Ecology reported that at least two fish were killed as a result of these leaks. A stop work order is now in effect for the project area until full containment of the spills is achieved. Contractors have replaced the faulty generator, and crews are monitoring the construction zone for any further issues.
The incidents highlight the environmental risks that construction projects pose to local ecosystems, particularly in sensitive areas like Padden Creek. Local authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent future leaks. The ongoing situation may lead to increased scrutiny of construction practices in the region.
