Passenger fares for Washington State ferries to rise this fall

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington State Transportation Commission approved fare increases for state ferries during a meeting on August 6, 2025. Starting October 1, vehicle and passenger fares will rise by an average of 3%, followed by another 3% increase in May 2026. The summer season surcharge will also increase to 35% for all ferry routes, aligning with the current rate for the San Juan-Anacortes ferry. The commission stated that the price hikes are necessary to meet revenue targets established in the recent Transportation Budget, which was passed earlier this year. This fare adjustment coincides with an upcoming increase in Lummi Island ferry fares set for August 23.

The commission's decision reflects ongoing financial pressures faced by the state’s transportation system. Higher ferry fares will impact local residents and tourists who rely on these routes for transportation. Stakeholders are concerned about the potential effects on ridership and local economies.
