Accessibility matters at the Community Boating Center

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Community Boating Center (CBC) in Bellingham, WA, is enhancing accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges by installing a wheelchair-accessible dock and acquiring Hansa sailboats specifically designed for wheelchair users. Executive Director Bryan Rust emphasized that boating is often viewed as a sport for the socio-economic elite, but the CBC aims to change that perception. Partnering with Daman Wandke, a disability advocate and avid sailor, the CBC has made significant strides in inclusivity over the past few years. Wandke, who has cerebral palsy, shared that finding accessible ways to enjoy the water has been life-changing. The CBC plans to host inclusive racing events, envisioning a scenario where everyone can participate on equal footing.

They are actively pursuing additional funding and building partnerships with local organizations to support their mission. Rust highlighted the challenges of operating a nonprofit but remains optimistic about the community's support. The installation of the new dock and the acquisition of more accessible boats will further their goal of creating a welcoming environment for all.
