Bellingham, WALocal News

Lisa Janicki, Skagit County's District 3 Commissioner, will retire at the end of this year, as she announced in a statement. Janicki has served on the Board of Commissioners since late 2014 and has been instrumental in several local initiatives. She was a key figure in establishing North Star, an organization dedicated to ending homelessness in the region, and she oversaw the opening of Martha’s Place, a permanent supportive housing project, in 2023. Additionally, she played a crucial role in the development of the STAR Center, an inpatient mental health care clinic. Her colleagues recognized her creativity and determination in finding solutions for community issues.

The retirement opens the way for new leadership in Skagit County, as the local Democratic Party will nominate three candidates for her replacement. The remaining two Commissioners will review these nominations and make a final decision by year-end. Janicki's contributions have made a lasting impact on the county's approach to homelessness and mental health care.
