New Whatcom County Jail may need more beds than expected

Bellingham, WALocal News

A recent study indicates that Whatcom County's new jail could require nearly 500 beds upon its completion in summer 2028. Eric Ratts, a national expert, presented his findings to the county council, highlighting a current need for 400 beds based on today's requirements. The existing jail in Bellingham has only 211 beds, and projections suggest that the need could rise to 720 beds by 2050 due to anticipated population growth. The county council will consider multiple capacity scenarios once a design builder is selected in August. This decision is crucial given the increasing demands on the county's correctional facilities.

The current jail's limitations have raised concerns about public safety and rehabilitation. Local officials aim to ensure that the new facility can adequately serve the community's needs. The urgency of this project underscores the importance of planning for future growth in the region.
