Ferndale voters to see citys first initiative on the ballot this fall

Bellingham, WALocal News

This fall, voters in Ferndale will decide on Initiative 25-01, aimed at eliminating "junk fees" for renters. The initiative, submitted in March to the Whatcom County Auditor's Office, aligns with a similar ordinance recently enacted in Bellingham. If passed, it will cap application fees at $50 and ban charges for using in-unit appliances and common areas. Supporters believe the measure is essential as many residents face financial hardships. The initiative reflects a growing trend in local governance to address housing affordability issues.

The City of Ferndale is actively seeking volunteers to write pro and con statements in preparation for the November ballot. Applications for these statements are due by July 27. By engaging the community in this process, officials aim to foster informed discussions regarding housing costs.
