New survey suggests Whatcom County businesses hit hard by Canada tariffs

Bellingham, WALocal News

A recent survey indicates that over half of Whatcom County businesses have been negatively impacted by reduced Canadian visitors. Conducted by the Bellingham Regional Chamber of Commerce and WWU Border Policy Research Institute, the survey revealed that 70% of local businesses expect to face direct consequences from newly enacted tariffs. Dr. Laurie Trautman reported a striking 47% decrease in vehicles crossing from British Columbia in May compared to the same month last year. Retail sectors, especially in Blaine, Lynden, and Sumas, are experiencing the most significant downturn.

Businesses noted that the increased cost of imported wood will also lead to higher repair costs for homes and commercial properties. Some local entrepreneurs expressed support for the tariffs, citing their potential to enhance domestic manufacturing. Understanding these dynamics is crucial as local economies adjust to changing cross-border relationships. The full survey findings can be accessed on CEDAR.
