Voters will decide whether to de-annex hundreds of acres in eastern Blaine
Blaine's electorate will vote this November on a proposal to de-annex about 570 acres of land in the eastern part of the city. The city council approved placing this measure on the ballot, targeting undeveloped rural property that has remained untouched for nearly 30 years. This area includes 470 acres on the Grandis Pond property, which was once envisioned as a major housing development but has since stagnated. The land consists of forested wetlands and ponds, rendering it unsuitable for residential construction. In exchange for the de-annexed land, Blaine plans to pursue urban growth areas near Semiahmoo.
The proposal requires a 60% supermajority for approval, highlighting its significance for local governance. Successful de-annexation could facilitate new development opportunities and alter Blaine's growth trajectory. This decision reflects ongoing discussions about land use and urban planning in the region.
