August special election puts levies and public office candidates to a vote
Whatcom County’s special election ballots were distributed on July 16, allowing voters to consider two key levies for the South Whatcom Fire Authority and the Whatcom County Rural Library District. The election will also feature numerous contested public office races, necessitating a primary election to narrow candidates for eight offices. Among the notable races, Port Commissioner Ken Bell faces challenges from small business owner Carly James and Kaylin Bosley of the Northwest Washington Gender Alliance. Additionally, four candidates, including former Sumas Mayor Kyle Christensen, are competing against incumbent Tyler Byrd for the district three county council position. Three new candidates are also vying to replace Todd Donovan, who opted not to run for a fourth term.
Voters should expect to receive their ballots by July 22, and these must be submitted by August 5 to count. This election holds significant implications for local governance and funding for essential services. Residents can find further information on the Whatcom County elections page.
