Skagit Valley farmworker rights activist Lelo granted request for voluntary departure

Bellingham, WALocal News

Activist Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez Zeferino will leave the U. S. voluntarily after being detained by ICE since March. His lawyer stated that he opted for voluntary departure due to the unbearable conditions in the detention facility. A judge granted his request on July 14, allowing him to depart without facing a forced removal.

Originally scheduled for an immigration court date in November, Juarez Zeferino's decision was influenced by the uncertainty surrounding bond release in a notoriously tough Tacoma immigration court. He was forcibly removed from his vehicle by ICE agents while dropping off his partner, highlighting the aggressive tactics used in immigration enforcement. Supporters rallied outside the NW Detention Center, emphasizing the local community's backing for his cause. His voluntary departure may allow him to return to the U. S.

in the future, depending on immigration policies. Juarez Zeferino could be in Mexico within a week, marking a significant moment in his activism for farmworker rights.
