Washington joins multistate federal lawsuit for withholding 7 billion in formula grants

Bellingham, WALocal News

Washington state has joined a multistate lawsuit against the U. S. Department of Education and the Office of Management and Budget for withholding $7 billion in education funding. Attorney General Nick Brown's office announced the lawsuit on July 14, emphasizing that the federal government is legally required to provide these grants. The funding supports critical programs for English learners, children of migratory workers, and staff development.

Originally slated for distribution on July 1, the grants were delayed due to a last-minute review announcement from federal officials. In Washington, nearly $137 million is expected to benefit K-12 schools, with an additional $13 million held for adult education. The lawsuit includes participation from 22 other states and D. C. , seeking to compel the federal government to comply with its funding obligations.

This legal action underscores the ongoing conflicts surrounding education funding and state rights in educational policy. The outcome could significantly impact educational resources and programs for vulnerable student populations.
