Queer Joy Celebrating Pride in Whatcom County

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Bellingham Queer Collective (BQC) aims to create social spaces for queer individuals in Whatcom County, addressing the need for community outside traditional venues like bars. Founded by Michelle Harmeier during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization provides options for queer people seeking connection. BQC complements existing support systems like PFLAG, which has been active in the region for over 30 years, focusing on advocacy and education. PFLAG board member Katherine Robichaux emphasizes the mixed representation on their board, which includes diverse gender identities. BQC hosts affinity groups to cater to different identities, fostering a safe environment for dialogue.

The organization has recently rented a new space in downtown Bellingham to serve as a "third place" for queer individuals. This collaborative approach between BQC and PFLAG highlights a commitment to building community and supporting individuals in need. Together, these organizations work to enhance visibility and provide resources for the local LGBTQ+ population.
