Possible water contamination reported on Lake Whatcom at Camp Firewood

Bellingham, WALocal News

A public health alert has been issued for residents drawing drinking water from Lake Whatcom after a sewage overflow occurred at Camp Firwood on July 7. The Whatcom County Health and Community Services reported that some sewage entered a stormwater drain that leads directly to the lake. In response, crews from the Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District installed a temporary pump and commenced repairs on the sewer lift station. Residents without a disinfection system are advised to boil their water for at least one minute to ensure safety. Customers of Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer and the City of Bellingham are not required to boil their water, indicating that their water supply remains safe.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining water quality in the region. Public health officials emphasize the importance of proper water treatment systems for those relying on direct sources. The local community is urged to stay informed about water safety as repairs progress.
