Whatcom County fire ban begins Thursday

Bellingham, WALocal News

Starting Thursday, July 3, campfires, fire pits, and barbecue grills will be banned in the North Cascades National Park Service Complex due to increased wildfire risks in east Whatcom County. The ban encompasses popular recreational areas, including Ross Lake and Lake Chelan, along with all campgrounds along Highway 20. Warm weather and a decrease in spring precipitation have created conditions favorable for wildfires, prompting officials to act. Visitors can still use stoves or grills powered by bottled or pressurized liquid fuel, as long as they feature an on/off switch. Park officials are urging recreationists to exercise caution, particularly regarding smoking, and strictly prohibit fireworks on federal lands.

The ban reflects a proactive approach to safeguard the environment and public safety during the summer months. Authorities encourage compliance to mitigate potential fire hazards in the region. Local residents and visitors alike are advised to stay informed about fire safety regulations as summer unfolds.
